I thought about it. Video games get lots of sequels. Some are actually better than the original. With the three anticipated titles for me this year all being sequels it got me to thinking what sequels are actually better than the original. At the same time though what if the previous installment in the series wasn’t that bad, but what if the game didn’t make leaps and bounds improvements but still was better? Does that get included in the list? I didn’t think too far when I made this list but here we go.
10. Super Mario Bros. 3
Following up the semi-flop that was Mario 2 this game was a vast improvement over the last one. I’m not saying Mario 2 was god awful. I really am not. Mario 2 was different. It strayed from the formula that would be the 2-D sidescrolling formula that Mario series perfected. Granted this game is older and still holds up to say that as a sequel it was leaps and bounds better would be like saying Majora’s Mask was leaps and bounds better.
09. God of War III
Following up the first game was tough on the game’s makers that the second one was a bit of a letdown of sorts. The third game though ties everything up nice and neat with a nice little bit of polish. It’s tough though to hate on a game like this with so many games in the series being near perfect. The fact remains Kratos is one of the most badass anti-heroes in gaming and hopefully it stays that way.
08. Assassin’s Creed II
The first in the series had a nice amount of flaws. Repetitive gameplay, redundant missions, too short, and at times not fun at all. The control scheme was awkward. So what did Ubisoft do. They saved a franchise. Ass. Creed II was a vast improvement in the series. Sure it wasn’t perfect, there were still some tweaks to fix but at the same time the game was almost leaps and bounds better. From transforming a mediocre to potentially awesome series into what it is today you have to give them credit. Sure the repetitiveness remains but at least they fixed most of the bugs.
07. Resident Evil 4
The other RE games are pretty solid. I mean they aren’t flawless and perfect but they are still solid by today’s standards. This installment though was different. It told a newer style of narrative for the series. Something different, it was more story driven. Wasn’t supposed to be horror driven. And the overnight success led to RE5 being the same. The company didn’t know what to do! The game was huge! Make RE6 the same way I say. RE4 had quick time events, easy controls, good characters. Plus it looked sexy.
06. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
MGS was one of those series that was just so awesome you can’t put into words. MGS2 comes out, while it was good (seriously it was good) it wasn’t great. Most fans were mad about fucking Raiden and how he sucked balls and how annoying and whiny he was. Yes I hated Raiden. But then Snake Eater comes along and saves us. Yes it takes place in the 1960’s but it redeems the series. MGS3 had an open environment but at the same time didn’t. One of the flaws of MGS4. It was open and at the same time didn’t have the closeness of MGS3.
05. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
Hailed as the best GTA game out there, and it was, Vice City improved itself upon GTA3. Not that GTA3 was bad Vice City just fixed up a few of the problems 3 had. Unfortunately you had to deal with San Andreas before the game that was Vice City would be almost perfect in GTA4. Vice City though had good music, easy to get into gameplay. It was fun to be retarded. Sadly some of the physics were off even for the 1980s.
04. Red Dead Redemption
Red Dead Revolver was okay. It was flawed. It wasn’t great. It was simply put, okay. Along comes Redemption and everyone is in love. The game is literally just like the first one should have been. Set out in the West during cowboy times. Yes GTA with Horses summed up the game flawlessly. It did well at awards time as compared to it’s predecessor. I love when companies out do themselves cuz then they fucked on the next one they have to do.
03. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to The Past
Following up Zelda 2: Link’s Adventure is not hard at all. But when you are a Link to the Past you totally and utterly rape us with sheer awesome power. I mean we are talking about a game that is just by far the greatest Zelda game ever. Take that Ocarina! I prefer the 2-D world and double digit dungeons that all add up to the normal Zelda plot. This game is almost flawless but at the same time so flawed that it makes us think about the deep message that is hidden. Maybe I’m bull shitting a bit here.
02. Mass Effect 2
Mass Effect 3 has a lot to live up to. It really does. ME2 was a near perfect gaming experience that many will not get a chance to try because they don’t care. The story, the characters, everything about this game was vastly improved over the quality that was ME1. While some would disagree and cite ME1 as a superior game due to all the other stuff you could do in it that I didn’t care for. ME3 though closes up the huge series but I really don’t think they would do that for a huge huge huge series like this. Take a look at the video for yourself. It’s amazing.
01. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
This game is as advertised. Perfect. Flawless. 10/10. I played it, hated it. Restarted it and loved it. I don’t know what changed my mind. Yes the game is linear, and what not. It’s not long, it’s not short either. It’s very cinematic. But it’s gorgeous. It’s amazing. I want to play it again. Uncharted 1, eh it’s not that bad, it’s like a 9 out of 10 game but come on Uncharted 2 is like having sex with your dream girl and Uncharted 1 is like having sex with someone you met at a party. See how improved that is. I can’t even describe it.
