End of the Year Awards Thing: Video Games

The  year of 2010 is officially over and that means it’s time to dish out awards that don’t mean squat to the people who can earn them. These are the awards that have no name, I wish they had some fancy name like the Crystal Kastle or something like that. Maybe we can call them the Angry Banjo awards were the winners receive a golden banjo…or I’ll think of a name in the next few weeks and then edit this post and give it it’s name.

Alright so over the next week I’ll give out the awards for each of the big things, Video Games, Movies, Music and Pop Culture. The Pop Culture awards will award the best and worst trends in both people and popular culture. While the gaming awards recognize the best of the gaming world from console to handheld. Music will give a slight bias to indie rock and a slight disgust for the pop music world and movies might hold a slight Jeff Bridges bias…

this is my current desktop so see the bias

And now for the game awards shall we. I took some of the ideas from IGN [well they are very general ones too]. So let’s start…

Best Story
This was a great year for games all around. The Playstation and X-Box had strong outings this year as did the PC. I didn’t get to play handhelds quite as much as I would have liked but maybe in the near future we will see more.

The Winner: Mass Effect 2 (PC, X-Box)
When this game first game out I had just finished ME1. I was stoked to play it. Hell I installed it right away. As soon as I began I was hooked onto the game. It was so intense. Yes the story wasn’t the most superior but it’s character development, the way you can gain loyalty to your characters which helps the story develop is intense and intriguing. On top of that you can bone one your crew members but at what cost? Also the decision making is more involved. Being a bad guy never felt like so much fun.

Honorable Mentions:
Red Dead Redemption (PS3, X-Box)
Fallout: New Vegas (PS3, X-Box, PC)

Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep (PSP)
Metal Gear Solid: Peacewalker (PSP)

Alright enough nerdgasming over Mass Effect.

Most Fun Game: Red Dead Redemption (Multi)
This game was a must have I guess you can say from the moment it came out. Granted it’s pretty much GTA out in the wild west. The characters have you coming back for more and the visuals are stunning. You simply cannot put your controller down for this one in the least, it’s not all about story for this one, it’s about the environment.
Honorable Mentions:
Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World: The Video Game (PS3, X-Box)
Bioshock 2 (multi)
God of War III (PS3)

3D Dot Game Heroes (PS3)

Best Multi-Player (Competitive): BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger
Admit it. You know you love fighters more than FPS games. I know it. BlazBlue brings a new style of gaming to fighting. While it remains in 2-D this game has nice smooth anime like graphics and is tough on the fingers. Some people might find themselves with bloody hands after they master several combos.

Honorable Mentions
Madden NFL ’11 (Multi)
Perfect Dark (X-Box Live Arcade)
Super Street Fighter IV (PS3, X-Box)

Goldeneye (Wii)

Best Multiplayer (Co-op): Castle Crashers (PS3)
While it’s been on the X-Box with LIVE for a while it’s fresh in the minds of the owners of PS3 fans. Having already spent 40+ hours in this game on the X-Box it’s almost easy to give this award to this game even if I haven’t played this console version. I loved every second on the X-Box even playing alone so this is a must have if you only have a PS3.
Honorable Mentions:
Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World: The Video Game (Multi)
Monster Hunter Tri (Wii)
Donkey Kong Country Returns (Wii)
Metal Gear Solid: Peacewalker (PSP)

Most Bad Ass Atmosphere: Mass Effect 2 (multi)
Come on now. You have been reading my blog, you know how much I love Mass Effect. It was the best game of the year for me. The way the worlds are set up is just amazing. Space looks totally cool plus the slums look like slums and everything is as is. It’s just a wonderful time we have with Commander Shepard
Honorable Mentions:
Red Dead Redemption (multi)
Fallout: New Vegas (multi)
Transformers: War For Cybertron (PS3, PC, X-Box)
Metroid: The Other M (Wii)

Most Addictive Game: Mass Effect 2 (multi)
How many people can say they spent all their freetime for the first two weeks of a game’s release playing just that one game? Only me maybe. But that was how ME2 worked for me. It was such a great game in almost every facet. Yes the gameplay wasn’t the greatest but it was addictive as all get up.
Honorable Mentions:
Red Dead Redemption (multi)
Fallout: New Vegas (multi)
3D Dot Game Heroes (multi)
Super Meat Boy (PC)

Most Innovative: Mass Effect 2 (multi)
Is it that surprising to see this one win again? It lets your decisions impact the story. How bitching is that? Totally super awesome bitching. Play this game as a jerk and you won’t be let down, there is no way to be let down when you shove people out windows for the lulz.
Honorable Mentions:
Heavy Rain (PS3)
Metal Gear Solid: Peacewalker (PSP)
Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Wii)

Best Character: John Marston (Red Dead Redemption)
There is something about Mr. Marston that makes him the best character. Sure I could have just handed this award to ME2 again but that wouldn’t be fun. Marston is a sinner in a land where people are looking to sin pretty much and he is looking for…redemption. I don’t know what it is about him that just makes him so fucking bad ass but it’s driving me bat shit insane trying to figure it out.
Honorable Mentions:
Illusive Man, Thane, Garrus, Shepard, Mordin, and everyone else (Mass Effect 2)
DeathSpank (DeathSpank)
Mr. House (Fallout)

Best Visuals: Mass Effect 2 (multi)
This game is like having sex. It’s that good. It’s sweeping my awards and everything. It looked so real that you could touch it. One of those rare gems you might want to try in 3-D just so you can reach out and grab Miranda’s hot ass…wow I went too far.
Honorable Mentions
God of War III (PS3)
Red Dead Redemption (multi)
Fallout: New Vegas (multi)
Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood (multi)

Best Soundtrack: Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World: The Video Game (multi)
A movie like this gets it’s own arcade game. It’s sexy. Reminds me of Old NES games with Anamanaguchi doing the music, you know chiptune. It’s sleek and sexy. I like it. Not overproduced like some of the music you hear in other games. Granted some of these games didn’t have sweel tracks on them.Honorable Mentions:
Mega Man 10 (multi)
Bioshock 2 (multi)
Mass Effect (multi)
Super Meat Boy (multi)

Most Retro: 3D Dot Game Heroes (PS3)
Something about this game screams, hey we know this is a game, so let’s have fun. They do, it works. Think of Zelda in a more new sense but every character in the game knows that they are a game character and that is the case here. Awesome game, that’s all.

Honorable Mentions:
Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World: The Game (multi)
Donkey Kong Country Returns (Wii)

Super Meat Boy  (multi)
Castle Crashers (PS3)

Most Challenging: Super Meat Boy (multi)
Sure it looks easy but once you get into the puzzles and shit. Man it’s brutal hard. Still it’s fun as all get up especially since you are trying to thwart a fetus. That is hot.
Honorable Mentions:
Mega Man 10 (multi)
Scott Pilgrim Vs The World: The Game (multi)

And now it’s time for the special categories, well not really.
Best Sci-Fi Game: Mass Effect 2 (multi)
What can be said that isn’t said about this game? It’s near flawless. Expansion packs out the ass and everything make this game worthy of money on any gamers game list.
Honorable Mentions:
Bioshock 2 (multi)
Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood (multi)
Vanquish (multi)
Fallout: New Vegas (multi)

Best Horror Game: Bioshock 2 (multi)
Look it took it’s first award! Yeah! This game works as horror and non horror at the same time. It’s good but is it god tier? Maybe not like the first one but def worth playing through
Honorable Mentions:
Alan Wake (X-Box)
Heavy Rain (PS3)
Dead Rising 2 (Multi)

Best Fantasy Game: Darksiders (multi)
Maybe it’s because it’s a fusion of Zelda and God of War or it was a weak year in the genre this game takes a walk in the park and just slaughters all the other games in the category. The demo was fun but is the whole thing fun? I don’t know

Honorable Mentions:
Fable III (X-Box)
Bayonetta (PS3)
Castle Crashers (PS3)

Best Sports Game: MLB ’10: The Show (PS3)
Every year sports games fall short of what we gamers want from them. The graphics are either top notch or not touched at all. Some games feel like they are just a giant roster update while others actually tweak the gameplay. The Show feels like the perfect ball game for baseball fans. Granted trading players feels a bit cheap at times and so does the free agent signings. You can’t just throw 180 million dollars at Carl Crawford and expect him to sign, but winning the World Series the previous year doesn’t hurt.

Honorable Mentions:
Madden NFL ’11 (multi)
NCAA Football ’11 (multi)
NBA 2K11 (multi)

Best “Blockbuster”: Mass Effect 2
Enough is enough…
Honorable Mentions:
God of War III (PS3)
MGS: Peacewalker (PSP)
Ass. Creed: Brotherhood  (multi)

Best X-Box 360 Game: Mass Effect 2
Best PC Game: Mass Effect 2
Best PS3 Game: God of War III

So there you have it, awards season is underway, movies, music and pop culture are coming soon!
