DAILY LIST: The Best Of Jeff Bridges

I love me some Jeff Bridges. He is one helluva actor. Great talent at conveying all different kinds of emotion. Can sing pretty good too. He’s had a helluva run too in the cinema with roles ranging from Kevin Flynn to Rooster Cogburn. It wasn’t until last year when the Academy finally awarded him the award he so deserved from the very start. Join me as I count down the very best of America’s Treasure…Jeff Bridges.

Now I’m going to point out that while I am not well versed in every single film this man has done this is a comprehensive list that contains his modern films dating back into the beginning of the past few years. This list may not be agreeable to some and while I admit some films did get left off, it was not in spite of anyone.

07. The Men Who Stare At Goats
Role: Bill Django
Directed by: Grant Heslov
Release Date: November 6, 2009
Rotten Tomatoes: 52% (ROTTEN)

I’m not well versed in the life and times of the acting of Jeff Bridges so this film makes the list. A lot of people didn’t like this film but I loved it. Almost every second of it had me either in rip roaring laughter or with a look of super serial guys on my face. I thought Bridges had one of the best characters throughout the entire film. Take that George Clooney you were out acted by a superior actor.

06. Iron Man
Role: Obediah Stane/Iron Monger
Directed by: Jon Favereau
Release Date: April 14, 2008
Rotten Tomatoes: 94% (FRESH)

Bridges plays the villain in the first installment in this super hero franchise. Though it got overshadowed due to the release of The Dark Knight in July, his character was almost pure evil. I virtually forgot that that was the DUDE there playing a giant hate mongering evil man who wants nothing more than for Tony Stark to freakin die and take over the company. This movie was intense till the end, wish Bridges had a bigger role though.

05. TRON: Legacy
Role: Kevin Flynn/CLU 2.0
Directed by: Joseph Kosinski
Release Date: December 17, 2010
Rotten Tomatoes: 46% (ROTTEN)

We all know how much I loved this movie. I would probably suck this movie’s dick if it had one. I felt though that Bridges did carry this movie a lot more than he did in the first one. I felt playing two roles in this film really made him stand out more so than in other roles as well probably due to the extremes of the two. I cannot wait to see this movie again and again and again when it’s out on Blu Ray, that is how far my love goes.

04. True Grit
Role: “Rooster” Cogburn
Directed by: The Coen Brothers
Release Date: December 23, 2010
Rotten Tomatoes: 96% (FRESH)

It’s safe to say that as Bridges aged his roles became more and more fitting for him, he fell into them more. He was the perfect drunkard in this role too. As you can tell by reading my review Bridges was one of the main reasons why this film will be so successful in the awards season as well as the box office. It’s a shame though that he had to wear that eye patch the entire time. But what can you do about that? The Coens put out another great film with Bridges working on it with them.

03. Crazy Heart
Role: Bad Blake
Directed By: Harriet Walter
Release Date: December 16, 2009
Rotten Tomatoes: 91% (FRESH)

After so many years of searching Bridges finally nails his best actor award down playing the washed up country star. This film tears at your heart as you go through the life of the character in the way he lives it. It sort of brings back memories of a film that got snubbed a few years before it in The Wrestler. Bridges not only acts but sings in this one similar to another actor who got snubbed a few years back with Walk the Line. See a trend here. The academy is apologizing through Bridges.

02. TRON
Role: Kevin Flynn/CLU
Directed by: Steven Lisberger
Release Date: July 9, 1982
Rotten Tomatoes: 67% (FRESH)

When you look at this film’s plot you are confused. More so than almost any other film out there. It makes no sense but then you got Bridges taking it so seriously to the point that you either know he’s fucking with the audience or he actually believes in the plot. Yes the film looks dated by today’s standards but it still remains a classic, even if you want to see Bridges play two roles, albeit a short time. Watch as Bridges goes from cocky computer programmer to “internet” hero all in an hour and a half.

01. The Big Lebowski
Role: The Dude
Directed by: The Coen Brothers
Release: March 6, 1998
Rotten Tomatoes: 79% (FRESH)

Bridges plays the Dude, he’s your common every man sort of. This film has him drinking Caucasians and White Russians galore all while trying to figure out what to do about his damn rug. This is the Coen’s best film and if you disagree I will fight you on that. The film is full of dark humor and carries on with strong performances from Bridges who seems to be always stoned in this film. It’s one of my three favorite films of all time and if you haven’t seen it then go fucking see it. Fuck it Dude, let’s go bowling.
