I did the list for albums now I do a more finite list and it’s for film. Yes I know this blog covers everything and with the show closing it becomes more and more important that I cover everything. So in the coming months you’ll see music reviews, movie reviews, game reviews and my life as an intern. So here are the top films that I think everyone should watch out for this coming year.
Now for the jump and the list
14. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
Directed by: Rob Marhsall
Release Date: May 20, 2011
Yes I posted the other day ranting about how god awful this will be but you know what? I’m going to see it simply because I have seen the other 3 nightmares called films. This one doesn’t have that shitty romance between Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley so the story focuses all on Johnny Depp. Might be better than At World’s End.
Directed By: Kenneth Branagh
Release Date: May 6, 2011
Directed by a director I don’t even know Thor promises to be a Marvel flop. I say this because while the trailer looks semi-awesome it just doesn’t do it for me. Sure the movie has Natalie Portman in it and that’s almost enough to make me see any movie but still. The other reason people have to see it is it builds up to Joss Whedon’s The Avengers movie for next year. Ugh, glad I work at a theater and don’t have to pay…
12. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II
Directed By: David Yates
Release Date: July 15, 2011
Fuck you Harry and fuck her too. J.K. Rowling and the people at Warner split the final book in two to make more money not to tell the whole damn final chapter. Might as well call this part, the part that doesn’t make you ask for your money back as the first one was all about camping. This movie drops right before the Cap’n drops which either is a terrible thing for Harry or for the Cap. You decide
11. Real Steel
Directed By: Shawn Levy
Release Date: October 7, 2011
Sure this movie probably won’t be great but almost every other movie on this list is either a sequel or a reboot or a comic film that hasn’t shockingly been adapted yet. The teaser was just revealed the other week and it looks over the top. A boxing movie with robots, although they could just say Hugh Jackman stars in Rock-‘Em-Sock-‘Em Robots the Movie and it’d sell a lot.
10. Sucker Punch
Directed By: Zack Snyder
Release Date: March 25, 2011
If you can survive the harsh months of January and February and most of March then you can be treated to Snyder’s next gory R rated action packed thrill ride, Sucker Punch. The film has all of Snyder’s trademarks from his wide array of films like 300 and Watchmen…yeah, see how excited I am. See how weak this list is so far?
09. The Hangover: Part II
Directed By: Todd Phillips
Release Date: May 26, 2011
A sequel to a successful comedy never does as well as the original. Poor Todd Phillips couldn’t get Mel Gibson to do the cameo, instead he gets Bill Clinton. Not only is President Clinton cameoing but so is Mike Tyson, Paul Giamatti and Liam Neeson. Oh and production began 2 months ago. The original cast returns but what are they going to do now? The original trailer for the first one looked so-so but this one? I honestly don’t know, if you have faith then I will too.
08. The Adventure of TinTin: Secret of the Unicorn
Directed By: Steven Speilberg
Release Date: December 23, 2011
Wow, this movie packs a punch. With not just Speilberg’s name attached to the project but Peter Jackson as well. Not to mention legendary Doctor Who scribe Stephen Moffat who wrote the episode called “Blink.” Among the cast is Daniel Craig (007), Simon Pegg (Shuan of the Dead), Nick Frost (Hot Fuzz), and Andy Serkis (Gollum from LOTR). Also cowritten by the great Edgar Wright.
07. Sherlock Holmes 2
Directed By: Guy Ritchie
Release Date: December 16, 2011
What a great title, just add a 2 at the end and everything is alright, don’t have some clever title like the series is known for. Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law make their return next holiday season in the follow-up to the pleasantly surprising first film. Rachel McAdams also returns with the introduction of Stephen Fry to the cast. Nothing else exists but filming has started!
06. Super 8
Directed By: J.J Abrams
Release Date: June 10
J.J how I hate you. Lost was awful. Cloverfield was egotistical. Now this. This doesn’t look god awful. It looks more original than Skyline which got similarities to Cloverfield but was god awful. But Abrams in his vain ways refuses to reveal anything other than the fact that well it’s gonna be a homage to Speilberg’s early works, and it just might be a War of the Worlds esque film.
05. Source Code
Directed By: Duncan Jones
Release Date: April 1, 2011
Duncan Jones is known for two things in his life. The first one being that his real name is Zowie. The second being that he directed 2009’s Sci-Fi mind bending awesome film Moon with Sam Rockwell. Oh and by the way his real name is Zowie Bowie, yea he’s David Bowie’s son. Source Code seems like a fusion of the Matrix, Tron and some other movie. The plot is well interesting and I won’t delve into details but the cast is strong including Jake I can never pronounce your last name, the love interest of George Clooney from Up in the Air, and the black guy from America in the recent Bond films. I know their names but I am not saying them to be an ass. This is a must see because all the movies before it look like shit.
04. Cowboys and Aliens
Directed By: Jon Favereau
Release Date: July 29, 2011
Summer fun goes back to the old west. Originally starring Robert Downey Jr. but he had to drop for Sherlock 2 the film’s plot focuses on Daniel Craig who was abducted by aliens and has some alien thing on his wrist and now he has to help a town that wants him dead. I am not gonna pretend to understand the plot, it looks like a good comic adaption. The film costars Harrison Ford and Olivia Wilde as well as the aforementioned Rockwell.
03. Green Lantern
Directed By: Martin Campbell
Release Date: June 17, 2011
What a perfect time to put this movie out. Mid-June when everyone is free for summer vacation. This film is sure to be a hit. Or is it? The CG suit Ryan Reynolds wears looks a bit off. The character of Hal Jordan seems a bit off. Hmmmm I’m getting skeptical here. And it appears in the trailer and in synopsis that Sinestro is a good guy in this one meaning he probably turns evil in the end or in the sequel. This is too much for an aging director who did Casino Royale and Goldeneye. Who knows what will happen, but I’ll see it for shits and giggles.
02. X-Men: First Class
Directed By: Matthew Vaughn
Release Date: June 3, 2011
This is out this year? I had no idea. I’m excited to see Kevin Bacon be a villain and X-Men without Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellan. Oh boy 1960’s X-Men should be groovy! Other than that there is a plot outline out there is nothing else there.
01. The First Avenger: Captain America
Directed By: Joe Johnston
Release Date: July 22, 2011
Of course this is the most heavily looked forward to movie. This man symbolizes America. Hugo Weaving as the Red Skull is fucking awesome. Chris Evans as the Cap is questionable but we won’t know until July. I’m not sure why it’s not coming out the holiday weekend. But who knows. I am looking forward to this with a giant boner.
